FOCUSING IN - SOME INTERESTING WORDS CONNECTED WITH CRIME
A euphemism is the use of an inoffensive word in place of one that is considered objectionable or too explicit. Euphemisms say a lot about the society that uses them. For example, in Victorian England, a piano didn't have legs, it had limbs. With that in mind, what do the following euphemisms say about the criminal element in society?
  • Administrative irregularities = fraud.
  • Alternative route = secret route or skills used to avoid normal trading practices, instructions or laws.
  • Cash and carry = money in an envelope; transfer of 'commissions' or payment for delivery of business information.
  • Commission = money paid as bribery; greasing a person's palm.
  • Creative bookkeeping = obscuring or eliminating administrative data that indicates suspicious activity.
  • Hourly-rate increase = doing nothing or doing other work during working hours or while claiming to be on sick leave.
  • Loss = collective name for goods that have disappeared or cannot be found in the administration.
  • Oddments = selected foods used to fill pockets or car boots.
  • Proletarian shopping - shoplifting.
  • Rewriting = intentionally incorrect bookkeeping of money, good, time or expenses.
