FOCUSING IN - SOME INTERESTING FACTS | | - The software industry loses more than $15.2 billion worldwide every year, due to software piracy - nearly 15 times, in dollars, the number of Elvis Presley records sold to date, which exceeds $1 billion.
- According to a May 1995 Computerworld survey of information systems professionals, 47% of respondents admitted to copying commercial software illegally, despite the fact that 78% agreed that it should never be done.
- Computer software is protected in South Africa by the Copyright Act. An amendment to the Act, which took effect on July 10, 1992, has resulted in computer software being recognised as a specific category of copyrighted works, placing it on the same level as other separately recognised categories - such as literary works, artistic works and cinematograph films.
- In terms of the Copyright Act, the committing of certain acts in relating to computer software (including, but not limited to the copying of software) can constitute a civil or criminal wrong doing.
